I stopped booking Airbnbs a few years ago. I’d had it with chore lists and inconsistent amenities (once, a kitchen was so poorly stocked I had to drive to the store to purchase coffee mugs). There were things I missed, though - like being able to do a load of laundry or prepare meals in a kitchen. This is why I was eager to check into The Ann Savannah, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy. The hotel promised to combine all the things I loved about Airbnbs with the service and amenities I value in a hotel.

The Langham, Chicago, rose above the Chicago River, its windows glimmering in the sunlight. “Wow,” mouthed my cousin. Before I could respond, a bellman welcomed us, offering to assist with our luggage. We were there for a mini-vacation, and judging by the lobby, we’d picked the right hotel. The hotel occupies thirteen floors of a skyscraper featuring aluminum and bronze-tinted glass, designed by the famed architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe.

I love national parks and waking up surrounded by nature. However, as I've grown older, I've found myself less and less interested in camping. I’m simply too attached to creature comforts like private bathrooms and premium mattresses. It’s rare to find a hotel that truly surprises, but it happened to me recently at Hotel Vin, Autograph Collection, in Texas. The hotel is conveniently located adjacent to the Grapevine Rail Station, allowing you to ride the train directly from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. However, I arrived by car. The first surprise was how short the drive was. The hotel is less than 10 minutes from the airport.
