In 1998, Congress recognized Bristol, Tenn., as the birthplace of country music. “Their resolution cites the historic recording sessions that took place in the city in 1927,” Vitrola states, “even if they weren’t technically the first country music recordings to occur.”Based on research from the Historic New Orleans Collection, country music could be heard emanating from New Orleans’ Congo Square during the colonial era.

An educator and pastor, Henderson Hollowell Dunn devoted his life to uplifting the Black community in New Orleans. He started a preschool for Black children in 1911 while serving as the pastor of Central Congregational Church. Known as the Isabella Hume Child Development Center, it is “one of the oldest pre-school education centers designed to serve African American children in the South and probably in the country,” the website states.
