You name it, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown could perform it and play it. “Brown started crossing boundaries – both musical and geographical – at a very young age,” Alligator Records states. “Brown’s music doesn’t elude categories. It embraces them.” Born in Vinton, La., in 1924, Brown grew up in Orange, Texas.

In 1998, Congress recognized Bristol, Tenn., as the birthplace of country music. “Their resolution cites the historic recording sessions that took place in the city in 1927,” Vitrola states, “even if they weren’t technically the first country music recordings to occur.”Based on research from the Historic New Orleans Collection, country music could be heard emanating from New Orleans’ Congo Square during the colonial era.

An educator and pastor, Henderson Hollowell Dunn devoted his life to uplifting the Black community in New Orleans. He started a preschool for Black children in 1911 while serving as the pastor of Central Congregational Church. Known as the Isabella Hume Child Development Center, it is “one of the oldest pre-school education centers designed to serve African American children in the South and probably in the country,” the website states.

Like his parents, Thomas Covington Dent dedicated his life to uplifting the Black community. As the first-born son of Dillard University President Albert W. Dent and classical pianist Ernestine Jessie Covington Dent, Thomas was a poet, jazz scholar, essayist, playwright, oral historian, journalist and cultural activist.

Before she married a Dillard University president in 1931, Ernestine Jessie Covington Dent was a concert pianist. Born to musical parents in Houston, Dent started playing piano when she was 4 years old. According to the Texas State Historical Association, her first piano teacher was “a well-respected musician from Louisiana, who trained dozens of schoolchildren in Houston” in the early 1900s. In 1915, Dent began taking violin lessons with New Orleans native Will Nickerson.

Flint-Goodridge Hospital and Dillard University thrived under the leadership of Albert Walker Dent. As the hospital’s business manager and superintendent, and as Dillard’s third president, Dent “improved education and health care for African-Americans and impoverished people in the Deep South,” Black Art Story states. Dent, born in Atlanta in 1904, earned an accounting degree from Morehouse College in 1926.

Three generations of the Lambert family made their mark in classical music. Charles-Richard Lambert was an internationally acclaimed musician and a conductor for the integrated Philharmonic Society, founded by free people of color in New Orleans in 1830. Born in New York in 1800, Lambert moved to New Orleans and married a free woman of color. The couple had a son named Charles Lucièn in 18928. After his first wife died, Lambert remarried. His second son, Sidney, was born in 1838.

Gourrier earned a medical technology degree at Xavier University in 1962, and a graduate degree in hematology/cytology from The Ohio State University in 1964. So, why is he known as Mr. Jazz? “Michael knows more about jazz than most people will ever know,” longtime WWOZ-FM Program Director Dwayne Breashears said in a 2008 profile on the Jazz Fest Forum.
