“Spring is a symphony of nature.” Never mind how the chaotic wind and blowing snow earlier this week sounded like a 3-year old in the percussion section. “Spring is a blank canvas.” I’m pretty sure my proverbial canvas blew a few streets over, along with most of the junk pile I had put out for pickup. “Spring is a blanket of warmth.” I’m thinking about putting the fluffy one back on the bed. “Spring is a burst of sunshine.” More like a micro-burst.

This form of junk-pile rubbernecking is key to ascertaining if curbside junk is trash or treasure. Raise your hand if you’ve ever “rescued” treasure from a junk pile. Guilty!A few years ago I rescued a — well, I’m not sure what it was — but, I crafted a beautiful, three-level fairy garden out of it complete with a pond, a fence, a whimsical fairy house and a sitting area for the fairies.

Those warbling sandhill cranes are at it again, crooning their way across the sky as they migrate from wintering, in the south, to breeding grounds, way up north. When I hear them overhead, I instinctively look up, scanning the sky, then watch in awe as they move slowly in formation. Their alto and baritone vocals are mesmerizing. We are fortunate to be in the migration path and, just 50 miles from one of their known resting places, Fruit Growers Reservoir near Eckert in Delta County.

I attended a multi-generational bridal shower a few years ago. The bride-to-be was in her early 20s and guests at the party ranged from early 20s (bridal attendants, family and friends), to those in their 80s (grandmothers, church ladies and elderly neighbors). The bride was gracious and bubbly as she opened her gifts, reading each card aloud and giving special attention to the giver as she opened their thoughtful gift. A few presents in, I realized something was amiss.
