    Air New Zealand’s underlying profit for the first half of its 2025 financial year fell as the airline battled economic headwinds and engine problems. Its earnings before tax were $155 million for the six months to December 31, down from $185m in the same prior period. Its net profit also declined from $129m to $106m. Chair Dame Therese Walsh said it was a strong result when considering headwinds the airline had been navigating for almost a year.

    The New Zealand sharemarket had a weak start to the year with the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 falling in light trading. The index closed down 0.33% at 13,067.83, a drop of 42.91 points on trading of 21.78 million shares worth $93.47 million. There were 52 decliners and 90 gainers on the main board. Shane Solly, portfolio manager with Harbour Asset Management, said the market was weak after a slightly weaker United States market overnight.

    The company that owned baby product retailer Baby City has gone into liquidation, with five stores being transferred to new management. The shareholder for Baby City Retail Investments appointed insolvency specialists Iain Shephard and Jessica Kellow of BDO Wellington on December 31. The company is 100% owned by Campbell Gower and its sole director at the time of liquidation was Anzac Dawson.
