Since I worked at the Bistrot on New Year’s Eve, I’m reminded of the fact that one of the things that people find curious about me is that I continued to wait tables even when I was officially employed in an office job. I only stopped working in restaurants when Covid hit and the restaurant business shut down. There are several answers that I give. The first one is simple – I won’t turn down extra money.

We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive fiber-delay-line-stabilized (FDL-stabilized) laser based on a dual Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) by using polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs). Two orthogonal polarization components of a beam are simultaneously transmitted in the interferometer. Each polarization component exhibits a unique phase shift in response to the changes in temperature, forming a dual MZI.

National service is supposed to turn boys into men. However, if you have a situation where the boys don’t need to clean up themselves, you have to ask what type of men we are producing. I’m close to my mother, but I don’t call myself a “mummy’s boy” because my mother would vomit and go into cardiac arrest if she had to do the heavy lifting for me. However, that’s exactly what we’re producing: a generation of “Mummy’s Boys,”instead of “Young Men.” Young men have dynamism and drive.

It’s been a rather wild few days for me as a blog publisher. I’ve seen more people flock to my obscure part of cyberspace in the last five days than I have in the last few years. As a rule of thumb, socio-political blogs don’t attract much traffic and are notoriously hard to make money from. Nobody goes online to read pro-government news when they can read it in the Straits Times. Nobody wants to be seen pumping too much money behind anyone mildly critical of the government.
