Childhood memories are funny things. For some people they are clear, crystalised moments, which they come back to; others have blocked most of them out while they try to sift through the trauma. There is no definite pattern for how we remember things or why we remember them either, but they are part of us, a thing we carry through the rest of our lives. Sometimes the weight is painful, sometimes it is comforting like a weighed blanket holding firm through the dark night.

Authorities in Hong Kong are following through on a pledge to bolster the city’s role as an offshore yuan trading hub via a rare issuance of bonds denominated in the Chinese currency. The city sold 1 billion yuan ($140 million) of debt maturing in three years under its Infrastructure Bond Programme, according to a statement on the government’s website on Thursday.

A gauge of expected yuan swings is hovering around the highest in nearly two years as traders brace for the risk of tariffs on Chinese exports if Donald Trump wins the tightly contested US Presidential race. The implied dollar-offshore yuan volatility over a one-month period stayed close to the highest since December 2022. The gap between that and a two-week gauge widened the most in data going back to 2011, in a sign that traders are expecting the Nov. 5 US elections to stoke wild market swings.
