That’s a lot, I guess, but that period encompasses three states and different eras of my life: adolescent summers, the college years, various New York apartments. Anyway, at this point I feel completely comfortable walking into a gym. You know the stride of someone who’s never been to a particular restaurant before, but is positive they’re headed the right way for the bathroom? That’s sort of where I’m at.

Whether the locker room smells like eucalyptus or jockstraps, I find fitness centers to be predictable ecosystems, stuffed with the same rooms and tools.

    I’ve spilled coffee on myself on two commutes in the last two weeks. I’m about to turn 30 — what the hell is wrong with me? Maybe I’m filling the Yeti a little too aggressively. Maybe the drink holsters on my backpack (which is about to turn five) are starting to give way. Maybe I need to stop hauling ass up the subway stairs. At any rate, I’ve resolved to start walking with my tumbler firmly in my grasp.
