On one of Steve’s and my first dates, we sat at the bar in a classic place in Palo Alto called 42nd Street. It felt so weirdly grown up and sophisticated to be 23 years old and perched on a barstool like Norm from “Cheers.” I have a vague memory of thinking we were gonna get “caught” for being fraud adults. These days, Steve and I make a beeline for a restaurant’s bar when we are dining out because, well, for all the reasons I’m about to share.

Three hundred and twenty one? Are you kidding me? This is the ranking that the website Wallethub.com has assigned to Chico under the heading of “The Best CollegeTowns in America.” Obviously, this is nonsense and completely bogus. Consider this my strongly worded letter of protest.

I'm EdSource's editor and internship leader for student journalists at colleges and universities throughout California. It's an amazing gig, and I love guiding young journalists. These past couple of weeks, however, has given me an increased respect for their roles in news coverage.

Now I work with college student journalists for my job with EdSource as an internship leader/editor. A recent meeting centered on summer opportunities, and I casually asked who was looking forward to being home for the summer. There were some mixed emotions, so I decided to do a very similar survey about the nest refilling — this time from the chicks’ perspective.
