The six-year-old is a good six months into what we’ll call her ‘academic’ life now. She has put the uncertainty of those first few days of junior infants behind her and is now blessedly trotting into school each morning like she owns the joint. We go through her homework in the evenings, a riot of new words and sums and pictures and primary colours. She is also starting to read books, which feels like a minor miracle to me.
