Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is broadly considered the most effective treatment for common symptoms of menopause, but its estimated use among postmenopausal women declined from about 27% to about 5% from 1999 to March 2020. In a study published in JAMA Health Forum, researchers used prescription medication data collected from more than 13 000 postmenopausal women in the US who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Although menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is the most effective treatment for the relief of hallmark menopausal symptoms, such as vasomotor symptoms and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, it is vastly underused.1 In this issue of JAMA Health Forum, Yang and Toriola2 provide compelling insights into temporal trends in MHT use in the US in recent decades, with important implications for clinical practice and women’s health.
