The die is cast. The US Supreme Court has refused the final appeal of 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana for a stay on his extradition to India. It has been more than 23 years, keeping in mind that he was possibly being tracked since 2002. It is the case of a man who stayed in the shadows, even while being linked closely to David Headley who was working directly under the Lashkar-e-Tayyba (LeT) towards giving effect to 26/11. Neither were arrested till well after 26/11. These are the bare facts.

It's ironic in the extreme. Even as the Pakistan Army marched in precision on the parade ground and showcased its might on the occasion of Pakistan Day two days ago (March 23), facts indicate that it is riven with divisions on an unprecedented scale. Apart from near-daily attacks on itself, the army has turned into a brute force, with its ‘counter-terrorism' operations not differentiating even children or women from terrorists.

The whole episode was like something from a Wild West movie, complete with a desert landscape and heavily armed fighters. In fact, it was a very professionally managed train hijack—no small task at any time—and executed with military precision, with women and children released immediately, and explicit statements by Pakistani soldiers released as “prisoners of war”. That says something about the group. It also says a lot about the future trajectory. This is serious.
