Jumps racing took centre stage at Sandown on Sunday with some familiar colours and faces winning both the $100,000 Australian Steeplechase (3900m) and the $100,000 Australian Hurdle (3900m). Joe’Neill’s Prime Thoroughbreds win a lot of flat races all over the country, but one of their most successful graduates has been Kiwi bred Reliable Man (GB) gelding The Cunning Fox.

The $175,000 Listed MRC Sandown Cup (3200m) on Sunday featured some battle hardened old stayers, but it was the young kind on the block that got the prize with four year-old Tavistock gelding Diwali scoring his first stakes win. Trained by Gavin Bedggood and ridden by Joe Bowditch, Diwali was way too strong and dashed away to win by nearly three lengths taking his overall record to four wins and three placigns from 15 starts with prizemoney just shy of $200,000.

A flashy chestnut filly with a bit of the Apache Cat’s about her was an eye-catching five length debut winner at Bendigo on Friday for the Ciaron Maher stable. Three year-old Trapeze Artist filly She’s an Artist had obviously given notice of her talents in jump outs as she was sent to the post a raging hot favourite in the 1100m maiden with Jamie Melham to ride. She blasted clear of her rivals to win as she pleased making the trip to Bendigo on a Friday worthwhile for Melham.

With Justify’s very best son City of Troy (USA) shuttling to Coolmore Australia this spring it’s worth remembering the power of the Justify x Fastnet Rock nick and we saw it to the fore at Sha Tin on Saturday when Australian bred four year-old Pray for Mir took out the Group III The Lion Rock Trophy (1600m). Trained by Cody Mo and ridden by Matthew Chadwick, Pray for Mir produced a tenacious effort to repel all challengers and win his first attempt at a stakes race by half a length.
