    The statewide setbacks bill comes amid other efforts to overhaul California’s harmful relationship with the fossil fuel industry. The state’s oil and gas regulatory agency, CalGEM, was embroiled in scandal in 2019 after watchdog groups revealed that regulators made personal investments in the oil companies they were supposed to oversee. After a shakeup from Governor Newsom, CalGEM has reoriented its priorities from promoting oil and gas extraction to protecting public health.
