Tibet’s struggle for autonomy in China is “one of the frontlines” in America’s battle with the Chinese Communist Party, a senior State Department official said at a Tibetan New Year celebration. Albert Gombis, the acting under secretary of state for civilian security, democracy and human rights, made the remark at an event marking Losar, or Tibetan New Year, at the State Department on Tuesday.

One of six siblings to the Tibetan spiritual leader, he leaves behind a legacy built on a lifetime of advocating against Chinese rule in Tibet.

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Dozens of people were killed on Tuesday and many buildings destroyed when a powerful earthquake struck Tibet in western China, according to U.S. and Chinese agencies. Tremors were felt hundreds of kilometres away in neighboring Nepal and India.

Fifteen Western countries have signed a public statement calling for China to release all “arbitrarily detained” Tibetans and Uyghurs and allow human rights observers to visit the regions in which they live. The statement was delivered in a speech on Tuesday to the U.N. Humans Rights Committee by Australia’s ambassador there, James Larsen, who drew a strong rebuke from his Chinese counterpart.
