During a recent mandatory training session titled “Respecting the Difference: Be the Difference,” I sat in a quiet room while the facilitator, with a calm and soothing voice reviewed the history, struggles and consequences of settler colonialism on Australia’s Indigenous population. I had considered delaying attending the session until next year — when I might have more emotional distance from the content — but decided to sit with the discomfort.

Everyone knows that whatever the result in the US election, the genocide in Gaza will continue. Neither presidential candidate offers a strategy to mitigate the climate crisis. Neither will dispel the growing geostrategic tensions that could, all too easily spill, over into a global conflict. Whoever wins, the tasks facing the left will remain broadly similar.

I find very, very, very offensive the fact that a Blak person in Bourke, if he sets one foot in a bloody pub up there, he will get his head kicked in. That is extremely offensive to me. I find very offensive the highest infant immortality rate in the world in this country amongst Blak kids… Now if people find me offensive, I don’t give a damn.

This is the fullm final version of the circulating open letter calling on the Victorian Muslim community to boycott the Victorian Premier’s Iftar. Assalamu alaikum. Since 2015, the tradition of hosting an annual Victorian Premier’s Iftar during Ramadan has been welcomed by sections of the Muslim community, with hundreds from the Victorian Muslim community accepting the Premier’s invitation to join the event held in Melbourne every year.
