Gilma Ramírez, an immigrant from Guatemala, found a lawyer to handle her immigration case through the video app TikTok. When she left a comment on the attorney’s profile in April, she had no idea it would open her up to a scam. Soon after, Ramírez got a message on TikTok from an account with the same name and profile picture as her lawyer, Maryland-based Nicole Whitaker. The account asked for her full name, address and phone number, which she sent. Then the texts started.
