    Chickens have joined the ranks of permitted animals in Smiths Falls, with the passing of its one-year backyard hen pilot program. “This is a decision that we don’t take lightly,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “Each of us has a responsibility to do what would be best for the community.”The long-standing poultry debate ended on May 5, when council passed the bylaw 4-3 with Pankow having the final deciding vote. Residents will be able to keep up to six laying hens of at least four months of age.
