    WYOMING COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) - Layoffs continue as the mining industry suffers an uncertain fate in West Virginia. Yesterday morning, roughly 200 miners in Wyoming County were told that their jobs would cease on August 4. The workers at the Itmann Mine #5 and Itmann Preparation Plant will not be employed there for at least six months following that August termination date.

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - Reanna Rosenthal will anchor and produce WVVA Today alongside Joshua Bolden beginning Wednesday, June 4. Reanna was born and raised on Long Island, NY, which she says is home to the “best-ever” bagels, pizza, and bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. She graduated from High Point University in the spring of 2025 with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. During her time at High Point, Reanna was an active member of the university’s broadcasting club, HPU Vision.

    BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - A local man has pleaded guilty to the theft of government money. Ross Jay Bailey, 50, of Cool Ridge, admitted in federal court that $1.4 million of the $2 million in loans he received through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act for his business were not used as intended. Bailey’s business is R&R Delivery Service Inc. Bailey further admitted that he converted these funds into purchases of stock and cryptocurrency for his personal enrichment.

(WVVA) - Another member of the group of people who attempted to use drones to bring contraband into FCI McDowell has plead guilty, and with that plea more information has been released. Miguel Angel Aleman-Piceno, 22, of Chicago, Illinois, pleaded guilty today to for conspiring to bring contraband into the federal prison.

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - A local woman who ran a home healthcare business plead guilty today after stealing government funds. April Elick, 43, of Bluefield, owes $97,802.59 in restitution after being caught in a fraudulent scheme involving COVID-19 loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration. Elick obtained roughly $84,000 in loans from the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
