Mogajane denied receiving any bribe, but new information confirms his links to the Mkhize sisters, who controlled the non-profit company. AmaBhungane can reveal that former National Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane is a family friend of the Mkhize sisters, whose non-profit company was paid R1-million by VBS Mutual Bank.

Dondo Mogajane denies receiving a bribe from VBS chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi. Matodzi alleges the former Treasury director-generalgave the nod for a R1 million payment into a bank account belonging to the Baphilile Foundation. Mogajane, however, has not responded to allegations of an informal meeting at which a 'bribe' was agreed. In August 2017, VBS Mutual Bank was dealt a blow that would, a few months down the line, prove to be fatal.

In August 2017 VBS Mutual Bank was dealt a blow that would, a few months down the line, prove to be fatal. The bank had run on illegal multi-million rand deposits from municipalities, with more and more of this money ending up being diverted to the pockets of a wide variety of characters. These included the bank’s management, municipal employees, “commission agents” liaising with those municipalities and political power brokers.
