The provincial government is taking steps to address the ailing BC forest industry and has launched a review of BC Timber Sales, which manages about 20 per cent of the province’s public timber supply. BC has become the highest cost producer in North America, prompting the lumber giants, Canfor and West Fraser Timber to pull back on their BC operations, resulting in closures of sawmills and pulp mills and the loss of hundreds of jobs across the province.

Body cameras will soon be worn by Kamloops Mounties, with the local detachment part of a national rollout of the tech devices starting on Monday..
The RCMP unveiled its country-wide roll-out plan Thursday and Kamloops is among 86 detachments across Canada to begin training to use the cameras over the next two months, starting on Monday.
Deployment of cameras will be expanded to 1,000 more officers per month, with 63 more detachments using them in January and 80 more to be added in February.

John Brink is tired of hearing about mill closures, diminished timber supplies and how forestry in British Columbia is a dying industry and he intends do something about that to give his employees some blue sky in an otherwise cloudy future.
The 84-year-old owner of the Brink Group of Companies has made a proposal to Canadian Forest Products to buy its mill operations and timber harvesting rights in Bear Lake, Vanderhoof and Fort St. John and also acquire Canfor’s forest tenure in Houston.

John Rustad reacted with anger to Canfor’s announcement that it will permanently close its sawmills in Vanderhoof and Fort St. John.
The Nechako Lakes MLA and BC Conservative leader says the closures are a troubling sign the forestry giants could eventually leave the province entirely unless immediate changes are made to forestry policies.
“This announcement is frustrating, it makes me extremely angry and quite frankly I’m really pissed off at this government,” said Rustad.

BC United leader Kevin Falcon promised that if his party is elected this fall he will make changes to B.C.’s faltering forestry sector that he says will create jobs, reduce bureaucracy and restore the province’s reputation as a global leader in producing high-quality wood products. Flacon also pledges to address the challenges of mismanagement of the sector by the current NDP government and would move the forest ministry from Victoria to Prince George.
