It won’t be in place when Westport holds its local elections in early April. But a plan by Westport Town Clerk Kristin Stinson would significantly change the way residents vote at future elections, if her 2025-26 budget is approved as written. Last Tuesday, Stinson told members of the finance committee that she hopes to consolidate all voting precincts into one voting location, likely at the high school, starting next year.

It’s a cliché, but you really have to see it to believe it. Henry Gillet sits down at the computer, puts on a pair of specialized glasses, hits a few keys and scrolls the mouse around a bit. In seconds, a full-fledged engine — belts, pistons, plugs and the fan all there — comes to life in front of the Westport High School senior, seeming to float perfectly about a foot or so in front of him. The new year has just begun, but half a dozen hopefuls have already pulled nomination papers in hopes of being on the ballot for town elections on Tuesday, April 8. The race for two seats on the select board — one three years, the other one year — is already looking tight, with five candidates already for the three-year seat currently held by chairwoman Shana Teas and the one-year unexpired term now vacant with the recent departure of former select board member and current 8th Bristol Rep.

Property owners and town workers have no immediate plans to move or bury a deceased humpback whale that washed up at Richmond Pond beach on New Year’s Day, and is still there nearly a week later. Instead, they’ll continue to watch and see if nature takes it back out to sea. The juvenile, estimated to be around 25 feet, washed in with the tide early on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 1, and came to rest on the beach adjacent to the Westport Land Conservation Trust-owned Richmond Pond.
