Yes, I did listen to a bit of radio. Even a spot of Radio 4 comedy. Brave, I know, but I do like policeman turned comedian Alfie Moore’s It’s a Fair Cop (currently broadcast on Monday nights in the 6.30pm slot). But nothing serious. Nothing with any gravitas. Or nearly nothing. I did stumble on the latest series on Radio 4’s The History Podcast. Well, I say, stumble but, actually, I was given a nudge by its producer.

But can we point you in the direction of this Glasgow gig by our favourite Fifer Jacob Alon? The singer-songwriter has often been called Scotland’s next big thing (we said it ourselves in The Herald Magazine back in January), a debut album, the sublime In Limerence, out May 30, is the next step on the journey. Alon’s delicate vocals and searingly honest lyrics have drawn comparisons to Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. Heady company, but Alon doesn’t sound out of place.

Mel Gibson in Braveheart (Image: Twentieth Century Fox) Bonnie Prince Charlie, Mary, Queen of Scots (usually getting her head chopped off), Queen Victoria wandering around the Highlands, Macbeth (as filtered through Shakespeare), the Body Snatchers and Brigadoon. To view Scottish history through its representations on the screen is to see a culture wrapped up in tartan, royalty, whimsy and wickedness.

The upside is I’ve discovered radio stations I’ve never heard of before. Taking my daughter to work this morning I landed on Fix Radio, “The Builder’s Station”. Yes, that is a thing. It’s a radio station for tradespeople, launched back in 2017.
