Photo / Calden JamiesonEarl-Jay Pehi is a champion NZ Muay Thai Kick Boxing champion and holds the WKA New Zealand title, along with the International Kickboxing Federation New Zealand title. Pehi is of Te Ātihaunui-ā-Pāpārangi descent and grew up in the Whanganui suburb of Castlecliff. He got into the sport at the age of 14 through the encouragement of a close friend.

Liana Hamlin’s passion for mahi māra (gardening) started at a young age with her grandparents. She was nurtured in the ways of her old people in how to grow and preserve food. Many years later the 34-year-old is now the Community Kai Champion in the Manawatū region. Hamlin hails from the Mahia Penninsula, and is of Ngāti Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine descent, but has lived in Palmerston North for most of her life.

But Karangaroa says without the encouragement of his parents, he wouldn’t know what hard work looked like and he is still trying to come to terms with being the fittest man in the country.
