For the first time in a long time, planet Earth reached an average temperature of 58.96 degrees Fahrenheit this year, according to a recently published study in Science, a highly respected journal. But that’s nothing compared to the hottest temperature of 96.8 degrees F over the past 485 million years.

I haven’t heard much lately about the throw-away society. Perhaps that’s because it has become so utterly ubiquitous, so omnipresent that we don’t even notice its existence. But it was figuratively thrown in our faces as Ruth and I drove several times between Eatonville and Puyallup during a recent West Side visit that took us past the mountainous, plastic-tarp-covered Pierce County landfill near Graham. There, a 168-acre pile of throwaways rises high above the highway.

Columnist Dale Courtney may well be correct in his belief that President Joe Biden is in cognitive decline and that the media has failed to report it. (July 18 Daily News, page 7A)Some people begin experiencing cognitive decline in their 20s or 30s, but more commonly in their 50s. It becomes very common in people in their 70s and beyond. If Biden is becoming cognitively impaired, he’s not the first cognitively impaired or incapacitated president to hold office.

I didn’t watch a presidential debate on June 27. Nobody did, because there wasn’t one. What CNN broadcast was a fraud that endangers democracy. The format wasn’t one of a formal debate. The very notion that citizens will, or should, base their voting decision on such an egregious debacle is stupefying.
