Dr. John Sarbak aspired to be a plastic surgeon since he was an eighth grader in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is an exciting field in which he has the opportunity to enhance beauty and boost patients’ self-confidence. And, indeed, after attending the University of Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, followed by several residencies, he now runs a well-established practice in Vero Beach, where he and his wife have lived since 2001.

He has been called the “Yellow Baron,” and he has struck awe—and sometimes fear—into the hearts of Indian River County residents, especially those unfamiliar with his work. Jane and Wayne Bushnell have been married 57 years. But, despite the fact that both are committed members of the Friends of Sebastian Inlet State Park who spend many hours on park property, they laugh that while volunteering they are “almost never in the same place at the same time.”The Pennsylvania natives first relocated to coastal New Jersey, where Wayne had his own business as a charter fishing boat captain.

Three times each week, the 36-passenger pontoon boat Discovery makes its way down the 3/4-mile channel that leads from FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s dock into the Indian River Lagoon. Part of Florida Atlantic University since 2007, the 50-year-old marine research powerhouse now offers educational boat tours to the public.

Setting the ToneUnder the baton of David Amado, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra performs in both Vero Beach and Stuart. This season’s Masterworks series will include quite an assortment: “Wild West,” “Paris Jazz,” “Latin Passions,” and “The Classics.” The ACO also works in concert with Vero Beach Museum of Art to present the three-part Chamber Music Series. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s 15th anniversary season is well underway, but seven more performances are still slated for Vero Beach.
