Metropolis Public Library board began its Tuesday, June 17, meeting with the swearing in of a new member. Abby Butler took the oath of office, replacing Amanda Ridel on the board. Board president Rhonda James reminded members the annual meeting will take place in July and will include the setting of regular board meetings and the election of officers. She also noted that three members are up for reappointment. Ted Wells and Kelly Sullivan have voiced they want to remain on the board.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The academic honors president’s list for the spring 2025 semester has been announced by Dr. Joseph Hopkins, Campbellsville University’s president. Gracie Hodges, of Metropolis, is among the students on the president’s list. The academic honors list recognizes students who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or above for the semester with a course load of at least 12 hours.

After years of practice, Dr. Jonathan Walters has noticed there are three health issues that will drive men into the doctor, especially at the insistence of a significant other. But no matter the cause, “having that bond and relationship and being able to open up to a provider about important health-related facts, things that may be of a sensitive nature, is really important. If you have any issues or concerns, make sure you’re not too afraid to bring things up,” he said.

Hosting its second Super 5K Fun Run/Walk on Thursday, June 12, Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition (MCDAC) coordinators decided to do some things a little differently. First, they changed the location. Instead of starting from the Harrah’s Metropolis parking lot, runners/walkers took off from Dorothy Miller Park to get to Washington Park and looping back. Secondly, the event was timed.

The church is located at the corner of Seventh and Vienna streets in Metropolis. Superman fans show their dedication during wet celebration

While over its 47 years the Metropolis Superman Celebration has been known as an event where it’s going to rain at some point, this year put fans and organizers to the test as downpours and sunshine traded places throughout the weekend, June 13-15. “As Metropolis always does, we go from wet to melting,” observed John Gleckler as he emceed the Heroes & Villains Costume Contest on Sunday, June 15.

The Metropolis K9 officer stopped a vehicle on Oak and Vista streets. A computer check on the driver, Michael W. Howett, 42, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, revealed he had suspended driver’s license. Howett was charged and issued a notice to appear. Metropolis officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 100 block of East 21st Street. Upon speaking with the victim, officers learned she had been attacked by Levi N. Lewis, 26, of Metropolis.
