    Our region needs Metro. That is a fact. Metro is also in desperate need of financial restructuring and accountability. That too is a fact. What to do about this issue, however, is sadly obscured in opinions and too much postering. We think it’s time to get real. Metro’s financial structure is based upon a regional compact – a highly arcane arrangement of obligations and commitments.

    The proposed entertainment district in Potomac Yard, Alexandria, that would provide commercial development and a new arena for the Washington Wizards and the Capitals is Richmond’s latest political hot potato. Much of the conflict centers on whether the project will be an economic winner for the commonwealth, or a financial drain. Whatever the partisan leanings of those on different sides of the issue, the key to any decision must be based on reliable economic data and analysis.

    When you are winning it’s easy to forget why you are winning, but it’s also hard to imagine why you won’t keep winning. That is the trap that we have fallen into. After decades of success, our region’s economic future is cloudy. What has worked to drive our economy is working less well. And on a relative basis in the competitive market for talent and opportunities, our region is falling further and further behind. We are not going to be winners much longer.
