This time last year we were flying high, basking in the glory of successive promotions and licking our lips at the prospect of playing our football in the Premier League for the first time in more than two decades. I remember vividly how exciting it was, with fans eagerly looking forward to taking on the big glamour clubs, like Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd. Could we match them? We’d give it a good go, we thought! A year later, and the picture is very different.

This year, the long-standing event will have a red, white and blue theme to mark the VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations. The weekend of fun starts on Saturday, May 24 with a family-friendly duathlon - a run and cycle - based at Framlingham Sports Club in Badingham Road. In the afternoon, there will be relaxed music, along with children’s games and family entertainment. The cost of entry to the music event is £8 before the day or £10 on the day.

First on the bill, by popular demand, we have a series of missed chances, followed by soft goals conceded, and then - you know what’s coming - a goalkeeping clanger. Some of those losses have been by a wide margin. Arsenal, Spurs and Man City spring to mind. But there have also been times when we’ve ended up on the wrong side of a really tight affair. The Brentford game was an example of that. In fact, I think we were unlucky to lose it. Given the rub of the green, we would have grabbed a point or perhaps more. I really don’t like criticising referees, but I have no choice, the man in black on Saturday was atrocious.

George Hirst celebrates his goal at Everton. Terry Hunt wants to see him starting for Ipswich Town (Image: Ross Halls) I have to be honest. At 2-0 down against Everton, with relegation already confirmed, I really was wishing the season could come to an end right there and then. What was the point, for goodness sake? But by the end of the game, as a fickle football fan, I’d changed my mind. A fantastic goal, a stirring comeback, and a very decent result.
