The 1930s would see the greatest ever expansion in newspaper readership, with daily sales rising from 4.7 million in 1926 to 10.6 million in 1939. At the start of the 1930s, the Daily Express was selling around 1.6 million daily and challenging the Daily Mail, which had dropped from around 2 million to 1.85 million.

A woman in her 40s has died in a fire in the five-story Nisbet House on Homerton Street in Hackney. About 30 fire fighters and six fire engines from Stoke Newington, Leyton, Homerton, and surrounding fire stations attended the fire in the morniung of January 6. The fire damaged part of the floor of one of the ground floor flats, and the victim, who is yet to be named, was found in the flat.
