Last year’s area batting champion, Southern Huntingdon sophomore Lydia Dell, broke out of her six-game batting slump Saturday afternoon in a big way in front of a Senior Afternoon crowd. The Rocket first baseman delivered a three-run home run with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to help Southern put runs on the scoreboard in a tight pitchers duel. Sophomore pitcher Ella Young and the Rocket defense held visiting Tyrone scoreless over the last five innings as Southern won a 3-1 decision.

Southern Huntingdon scored early and often during Thursday afternoon’s Inter-County Conference East Division contest at neighboring Mount Union. The Rockets pushed six runs home in both the first and second innings to quickly set the pace and went on to top the Trojans 15-4 in five innings. Southern’s ace Ella Young struck out four, walked three and scattered six hits in picking up the complete-game win.

The Huntingdon softball team has had some milestone wins this season and Thursday’s Laurel Highlands East Division contest against visiting Philipsburg-Osceola added to that list. Th Bearcats pushed a run home in the bottom of the first inning and made that one run stick as Alivia Nicklow struck out 12 batters and scattered five hits to out duel the Mounties Alivia Bizzarri for a second time this season and lead Huntingdon to a 1-0 victory.

Southern Huntingdon brought its two-game losing skid to an end Wednesday afternoon in a make-up game at McConnellsburg behind solid pitching from both Ella and Alle Young as well as a strong effort at the plate. The Rocket collected 12 hits and used a seven-run effort over the third and fourth innings to roll past the Spartans 10-0 in five innings. The Rockets shook off losses to Tussey Mountain and Claysburg to improve to 13-3 overall.

Northern Bedford sophomore pitcher Mylee Mitchell struck out 20 batters and scattered just three hits to lead the Panthers to a 4-0 victory over visiting Tussey Mountain in ICC East Division high school softball action Tuesday afternoon. The loss snapped the Titans four-game win streak, dropping the team to 8-7 overall and capping a 3-5 effort in the division, including a 7-4 setback at home against the Panthers back on April 17th.
