Huntingdon head softball coach Anna Tobias would be the first one to tell you that there is no easy afternoon in the Laurel Highlands and Tuesday’s game at Penns Valley just added to that statement. In just their third game of the season, the Bearcats were again embroiled in another pitcher’s duel. But, unfortunately, this one ended in the Bearcats’ first loss of the season.

No matter what the records are, when Tussey Mountain and Southern Huntingdon square off on the softball diamond, you can always expect a close contest. Such was the case in Tuesday afternoon’s ICC East Division battle on the Rockets’ field. Southern pushed three runs home in the bottom of the third with two outs and then let its pitching and defense do the rest of the work in picking up a 3-0 victory over the visiting Titans.

Emma Smith and Ella Young delivered two hits apiece, while Young struck out five and scattered four hits to lead Southern Huntingdon to a 6-3 win over visiting Windber Wednesday afternoon in high school softball action. The Rockets, who were coming off a 13-3, five-inning rout over Northern Bedford in Tuesday’s season opener, improved to 2-0 overall. The Ramblers (1-1) won a 10-7 decision at Southern Fulton Tuesday.

Huntingdon’s defense and pitching stepped up big once again during Wednesday afternoon’s home opener against Bellwood-Antis. Bearcat sophomore pitcher Alivia Nicklow continued to throw fire with 11 strikeouts on the afternoon, while giving up just three hits and the defense had just one error as Huntingdon topped the Blue Devils 3-1 in Laurel Highlands East Division softball action.

Philipsburg-Osceola ace Alivia Bizzarri limited Huntingdon to just one hit during Tuesday afternoon’s season opener on the Mounties diamond. But, that hit was a two-run home run by Alivia Nicklow with one out in the top of the first inning. The Bearcat defense paired with Nicklow’s stellar four-hit pitching effort was enough to make that early blast hold up as Huntingdon opened the season with a 2-0 win over the Mounties in high school softball action.
