Humans once hunted and gathered their food. Now most food is grown under carefully controlled conditions. In modern times fisheries are by far the biggest mass harvested wild food source. They feed billions and provide economic opportunities for tens of millions. Two thirds of those fisheries are in marine, or salt water, ecosystems. Of those marine ecosystems, the most productive are in high latitude ocean basins like the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea.
