Sledding in Switzerland's Jungfrau region is a far cry from most backyard "snow day" sledding. David Birri/Jungfrau Railways CNN  —  Jennifer Veilleux didn’t know what she was getting herself into when she agreed to a winter vacation with friends in Grindelwald, Switzerland. “I got a message from my friend that said, ‘Have you ever thought about going sledding in the Alps?’ ” says the 47-year old geographer and environmental scientist who lives in the Netherlands.

But when I do, I usually set my sights on a day trip to the sublime stretch of sand along Anna Maria Island, about an hour’s drive south of my home and another world entirely. My recent weekend stay with my husband and our two young kids at the newly-opened Mello on the Beach was nothing short of transporting.

In ski towns, “earning your turns” comes with inalienable bragging rights. The term, thought to originate from backcountry skiers in search of untouched snow, often involves bypassing ski lifts, gondolas and any other mechanized way up the mountain in favor of ascending on human power alone. “Earning your turns” usually requires using specialized ski equipment made for traveling uphill.
