William Ruto came into State House in September 2022 off the back of a political campaign that undoubtedly targeted Kenya’s youth. Rarely seen without a bright yellow baseball camp and t-shirt, atop of his 6-wheel campaign ‘monster truck’ adorned with flashing lights and the phrase “Every Hustler Matters” down the side, Ruto’s message was clear. He was the alternative to old dynasties, and he would tackle the problems of the everyday Kenyan, namely the cost of living.

Initially focused on the rejection of the country’s 2024 Finance Bill attention has since shifted to Ruto’s removal, police brutality, corruption, and politicians’ broken promises and lifestyles. Protests are not new to Kenya. Just last year, veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga and his Azimio la Umoja coalition called a series of protests to demand action against the country’s cost of living crisis.
