For Winifred Smith's extended family - which is made up of nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren - no family celebration, Christmas or birthday is complete without a rendition of her traditional fruit trifle, known affectionately as "Nan's trifle."Born in the English county of Derbyshire in 1914, Winifred learnt to make trifle when she worked at the Derby Road Café in Long Eaton as a young woman.
