TOKYO -- With U.S. President Joe Biden ending his reelection bid, Chinese leader Xi Jinping might begin shaping his long-term foreign policy with an eye toward former President Donald Trump winning a second term in November. At a campaign rally on Saturday, Trump said he received a "beautiful note" from the Chinese president after being shot in the ear at a July 13 event. China's Foreign Ministry had previously announced that Xi "expressed sympathies" to Trump after the shooting.

TOKYO -- Taiwan's presidential election on Jan. 13 is just weeks away and military pressure on the island by mainland China is on the rise. Yet, conversations with residents on the self-governed island suggest that a crisis in the Taiwan Strait is not a large concern. In mid-November, Taiwan's Defense Ministry allowed Nikkei and other Japanese news outlets to witness a military jet exercise at the Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taichung, near the Taiwan Strait.

TOKYO -- China's response to the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has been much harsher than Japan had anticipated, sending Tokyo officials scrambling to deal with the fallout. "I thought China would respond somehow, but I wasn't expecting it to go this far," a senior Japanese official who asked to remain anonymous said shortly after China decided Thursday to ban all seafood imports from Japan.

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's repeated use of the word "doubling" has exposed a lack of attention to detail, brought on public scrutiny and revealed a leader prone to making missteps. At the very least the reiterations have caused some confusion. This was on display on Feb. 15 during a lower house budget committee meeting that was taking up a proposed allocation meant to help lift Japan's sagging birthrate.
