That’s the deft high wire act writer/director Andrew Haigh pulls off in All of Us Strangers. Based on Taichi Yamada’s 1957 novel Strangers, the film explores important relationships amidst perplexing memories.

“The Book of Clarence” is ripped, not from the bible, but from fractured memories of past Hollywood biblical epics. Cue the chariot races, the filthy beggars shoved aside and cursed for their stink, and the gladiatorial combat on the way to liberating slaves. Beware the stoning of the harlot, the temptations of the flesh and the battle between the locals and the arrogant armored Roman occupiers on horseback.

Destination weddings are more suited for disaster movies than rom-coms. In real life, I’m the frugal Grinch that resists spending gobs of money to witness the wedding of two spendthrift souls, however exotic the locale. Add to that the natural strains of a major life decision played out in public. Plus the stressors of air travel in the time of sleep-deprived pilots, drunken handsy seat mates, ornery support animals, panic attacks (mine!) and unexplained delays. A good time was had by all?

When it comes to professional wrestling I can’t distinguish a piledriver from a flying elbow drop. So, please, pardon my obliviousness when I came to see Sean Durkin’s fact-based sports saga about the Texas wrestling dynasty the Von Erichs starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White. I anticipated an action-driven sports feature. Entertaining, sweaty and triumphant, or tinged by the agony of defeat and the power of athletic resurrection. What I didn’t expect was a male weepie.
