By Anton van Zyl and Thembi Siaga The basic cost of living is becoming more expensive, and in the past month, our Vhembe basket of essential food items has increased by almost R85. This means that local pensioners and people relying on a SASSA grant have had to absorb a 2.5% price hike. The main “culprits” driving the increase appear to be fresh produce such as tomatoes and onions. Products such as sugar and even bread have also shown alarming increases.

A teacher at Rivoni School for the Blind near Elim has resigned, following allegations of attempting to rape a 20-year-old male Grade 11 learner. The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, prompting around 60 residents to stage a peaceful protest outside the school on Friday, 30 May. Protesters voiced concern about the safety of learners at the school. They returned on Monday, 2 June, while mid-year exams were under way, to discuss what they claim is the second such incident.

A 50-year-old man, Joseph Khathutshelo Nelushi from Tshandama village near Thohoyandou, says his life has been on hold for more than three decades because of suspected identity fraud. Despite opening a police case and repeatedly visiting the Department of Home Affairs, Nelushi claims no meaningful action was taken until media pressure finally elicited a response. Nelushi said the ordeal had begun in the early 1990s when he had tried to register the birth of his child.

In a village where electricity is unreliable and fast internet is scarce, two young men have developed a free e-learning app to help rural learners access quality education. Malungelo Mathonsi and Khongelani Shibambu, both former pupils of Khathisa High School in Gumbani near Malamulele, created the Novar app to support learners in Grades 8 to 12. The app is designed to ensure that no learner is left behind simply because they cannot afford a tutor or attend a well-resourced school.
