The tournament’s top goalscorer Cody Gakpo couldn’t get any chances out of Turkey’s defense in the first half. Turkey struck first when Arda Güler’s cross found Samet Akaydin, whose close range header was too powerful for Bart Verbruggen in goal. Güler’s cross was his third goal involvement of the tournament, a great return for the nineteen year old.

Murat Yakin’s side were simply too good for the Azzurri, who couldn’t break down the resolute Swiss defense. Switzerland took their chances when they came. Ruben Vargas picked out Remo Freuler in the box who provided a clinical finish, late into the first half. Things got even better for Switzerland when Vargas went from goal provider to goal scorer.

Brilliant Austria top Group D

Ralf Ragnick’s side were never favored to even qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, being put in a group with France, the Netherlands and Poland. Goals from Romano Shmid, Marcel Sabitzer and an own goal from Donyell Malen gave Austria a 3-2 victory over the Netherlands. With that win, Austria finished the group with six points from a possible nine.
