Steelmaking currently accounts for approximately eight percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The only way to achieve net zero goals is to significantly reduce steel emissions worldwide. And there is no way to do that without recycling. The emission intensity of recycling-based steelmaking through an electric furnace is roughly 70 percent lower than integrated ore-based steelmaking in a blast furnace.

On December 28, 2023, the White House published presidential proclamations extending the tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) in place on imports of steel and aluminum products from the European Union (EU) until December 31, 2025. Starting in March 2018, additional tariffs have been in place on imports of steel and aluminum products, respectively, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
