Morning Edition Host Andrew Garcia and I decided to take a look at some other out-of-the-ordinary Pride activities happening in our neck of the woods. The company’s annual Shakespeare in the Park Festival marks its 53rd season with two very different summer productions this year: a Shakespearean tragedy and a comedy by Oscar Wilde. And for the fall, there’s a rom-com set in the Wild West. The shows take place at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater in Dallas.

The mega convention Fan Expo Dallas brought together enthusiasts of anime, fantasy, comics, sci-fi, gaming and more for three days last weekend at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. KERA Morning Edition host Andrew Garcia and I were there for opening day and spoke to some of the hundreds of cosplay actors dressed as their favorite characters.

We all know that public libraries are where you go to check out books, but did you also know it can be a great place to get a little TLC for beloved stuffed animals? KERA’s Morning Edition host Andrew Garcia and I recently discovered an event at the Timberglen branch of the Dallas Public Library that brings new life to well-loved toys. The Stuffed Animal Hospital is part of the library’s children’s programming where visitors can bring in their plush toys for repairs.

The art of falconry is over 4,000 years old, and it’s still going strong every weekend through Memorial Day at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie. On a recent trip to the faire, KERA producer Therese Powell and Morning Edition host Andrew Garcia lined up early to see the first birds of prey show of the day. John Karger, the Royal Falconer, rides out on horseback to the grassy stage and greets the crowd: “Good day, my lords and my ladies, welcome to the Royal Muse,” Karger said.

Dallas Arts Month, the annual celebration of the city's arts and culture scene, kicks off on Tuesday, April 1. During the monthlong event, you’ll find hundreds of art-related activities to enjoy, including exhibitions, performances and festivals. And speaking of festivals, one you don’t want to miss is the annual Changing Perspectives Block Party hosted by the Dallas Arts District. Headlining the free, family-friendly event this year is the Melbourne-based performing arts company Sway.
