1. IntroductionMicroplastics are becoming persistent pollutants that are of growing concern [1] due to their potential toxicity to aquatic biota and human health, as well as their association with pathogenic bacteria and effects on the food web [2,3]. Microplastics have become ubiquitous worldwide, in the oceans, on land, and even in polar glaciers where human activity is minimal, and they are regarded as a rising threat to ecological and environmental sustainability [4].
