Two of the scariest moments of my life happened not on a hospital bed while I was getting surgery — a fairly common part of my childhood — but when I was vacationing with my family. I was born with the severest form of Spina Bifida and in the 1980s there wasn’t much knowledge about the disability. My parents, Tom and Laura, were both 19 years old when I was born.

Lives lost, families torn apart and countless horrible memories that will never be forgotten. The Sept. 11 attacks can be summed up in so many words from people who lost a loved one or who crowded around their TV, watching in horror. Many students at Cal State LA are either too young to remember or were not born yet when the Sept. 11 attacks happened. However, faculty and staff remember that day like it was yesterday, including Student Union Director of Operations John Ortiz.

When it rains; it pours! That doesn’t happen too often in Southern California, especially during the summer. Southern California is bracing for its first tropical storm since September 15, 1939. The tropical storm had not reached Los Angeles county and is 285 miles south-southeast of San Diego. “As a cook and chef, our industry was hit hard. Out of work and not able to pay bills, we found ourselves in the shelters and it was rough, but we were able to sustain ourselves,” said Francisco Pacheco, a 43-year-old father of two kids who lost his job as a cook during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pacheco found himself living in a hotel room with his kids after losing his job and eventually, the place he and his children called home.

Campaigner, inquirer, seeker, solicitor. These are synonyms to describe a petitioner. On the other side of the spectrum, we have religious groups which are like petitioners in a sense that they go around to different neighborhoods and establishments to preach about their God. There are a wide variety of religious groups that do this, like the Advent Christian Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church and American Baptist Association.

In 1826, French lawyer Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, “Dis-moi ce que tu manges je te dirai ce que tu es.” In English that translates to, “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.”It could be said the other way around, “you are what you eat.”Does that mean that if people choose to eat healthy, they’re healthy? Or, does it mean that if people choose to eat unhealthy food, then they are unhealthy?
