    For most people, "desktop PC" means a classic mid-tower shape, and that shape is defined by the space needs of an ATX motherboard. This class of cases started out at around 17 inches tall, a fine fit for an ATX. But over the years, builders packed in more top-panel fans and liquid-cooling radiators, which meant more height was needed to fit those ATX boards (although some manufacturers made cases wider instead, with side-by-side chambers).
