The deadly product known as organophosphate or halephirimi in the communities has been blamed for the deaths of the six Naledi children and many others who consumed spaza shop snacks which had been exposed to the chemical.

It is believed that children who have died suspected of eating snacks from local spaza shops might have consumed the rat poison. Cabinet has, with immediate effect, banned the import of the toxic chemical rodenticides, also known as halephirimi, which was allegedly responsible for the deaths of children in Soweto last year.
