    For nearly two weeks, South African police have closely monitored an abandoned gold mine at Stilfontein, about 150 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Johannesburg. The mine reportedly descends vertically for more than 2 km (1.2 miles) underground and a rope is the only way down or up. It is believed that hundreds of illegal  are facing a grim situation after police cut off their supply lines in a bid to force them out.

    More than 700,000 of Lesotho’s 2, 3 million people are facing extreme hunger due to the severe El Nino drought. According to the World Vision, a global organization aiming to end poverty, 80% of Lesotho’s poor live in rural areas and are heavily dependent on crop and animal farming. Those populations have been especially hard hit by the El Nino drought, leaving nearly one third of the population in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
