For a regional journalist a regular workday can involve covering the minutiae of a small town, from the preps’ first day at school to a contentious council meeting to the unveiling of a new statue. In the blink of an eye, though, their whole day can change. In 2020-21, Australian women claimed more than 293 million services through Medicare. Almost nine in 10 visited a GP in 2021-22. However, according to a Cleanbill report, less than one in four GP clinics offer bulk billing in 2024. Experts say that this, coupled with a general lack of contraceptive knowledge, can make it harder for women to access sexual and reproductive healthcare.

The City of Ballarat always knew there was a bridge under the mall crossing the Yarrowee River. Earlier this year, the 153-year-old structure was finally uncovered during works to upgrade the Bridge Mall. It’s the city’s relentless relationship with history that keeps people coming to Ballarat. The city’s gold rush history began in 1851 when migrants moved to the regional Victorian town in search of gold and still encourages many people to visit the historic city today.

Australia will provide a $2.5 million aid package to Papua New Guinea (PNG) where more than 2,000 people have been buried by a landslide. The landslide occurred on Friday in the remote Enga Province where the treacherous terrain and geological instability is impacting rescue efforts. About 1,500 people have been displaced and the number of people thought to have been buried under the landslide has significantly increased since earlier estimates.
