    It’s verging on dawn when you arrive at the bottom of the endless braid. The air is crisp, cold. The dark locks sway gently in the breeze. The braid stretches upwards in a long, unbroken line. Far above you, it vanishes into a shroud of mist. The tower rises up from what once was a clearing in a wood. Now, the clearing’s meadow is subsumed by brambles, a thicket you sliced through on one of your many days of preparation. New thorns are already encroaching at the edges of the path you forged.

    Jay scrubs at the blood spot on her tennis shoe with her thumb and a gob of spit, hurried by the knowledge that Hardy will be there any moment. It’s swelter-hot on the gravel back road, and she’s doused in the sound of cicadas from the forest behind her and the quiet knowledge of what she’s left in that forest to rot. An engine growls through the humid air, and Jay straightens up like a kid caught sneaking treats from the pantry.

    6910 words, short story Elodie finds a pair of old opera glasses in the empty husk of an abandoned silo. The gleam of the metal catches her flashlight beam and throws it back, and Elodie squats and fishes out the glasses with tentative fingers. The silo is huge and dark around her, so quiet her footsteps echoing sounds like trespass, but the glasses are proof it was once inhabited.
