The late Kinky Friedman, a cigar-smoking novelist, country-rock musician, and two-time Texas gubernatorial candidate, had a decidedly idiosyncratic personality. He cultivated that image starting with his first album, 1973’s Sold American, which he recorded with his group, the Texas Jewboys. Black humor, sarcasm, and downright silliness permeate that set.

The White Animals – Star Time It would be easy to suggest that anyone who enjoys old-fashioned rock (not retro) just rock would find this band of interest. I’m old school & don’t expect to hear much “new” rock with a vintage authentic thrust. However old a baby-boomer is they’ll find this collection uniquely satisfying. “My Baby Put Me On the Shelf” opens with a hefty Vanilla Fudge torrent of mind-bending rock. Instantly pounding & well done.

Grayson Capps – Heartbreak, Misery & Death There are several artists I wish would do what Grayson Capps has done with his latest album. Record some “lost songs” that they appreciated growing up by other singers & reinterpret them in an updated modern way. I know to a degree Bob Dylan has done this, The Band (“Moondog Matinee”) & David Bowie (“Pin-Ups”). This set does have some familiar tunes scattered among the more obscure ones but it’s Mr. Capps’ spin on each that makes them so intriguing.
