The Institute for Citizens & Scholars is pleased to announce its seventh class of journalists named to the Higher Education Media Fellowship, supported by ECMC Foundation. The 15 outstanding journalists represent a variety of news outlets, regions, and media. The Higher Education Media Fellowship aims to increase the number of journalists equipped with tools and networks to provide more comprehensive coverage of postsecondary education, particularly career and technical education (CTE).

A collaboration between the Department of Theatre and the Resident Ensemble Players (REP), the festival was designed to celebrate student artists from all academic disciplines. Nearly three-quarters of the participants had majors not generally associated with the arts, such as economics, chemical engineering and biological sciences. “Most of us are raised doing some kind of art as kids,” said Steve Tague, theatre department chair and REP artistic director.

As the University of Delaware continues to maintain the high quality of its educational experience while working to control costs, UD has announced a 5% tuition increase in undergraduate and graduate programs for the 2023-24 academic year. To help alleviate the impact of this tuition increase to families and students, there will be no increase in mandatory fees for the second year in a row, despite significant inflation and rising expenses across the board.

In the sea of dark suits in the Delaware Legislative Hall, Fiona Eramo, a Legislative Fellow through the University of Delaware’s Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration, proudly stands out with a unique style that includes colorful thrifted attire complemented by a “they/them” pronouns pin on the jacket lapel. “Bringing my authentic self to work is really important to me,” Eramo said.

Smoke, haze and a burning odor remain present throughout Delaware as a result of the widespread wildfires in Canada. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) issued a Code Red Air Quality Action Day for Thursday, June 8. The air quality index in Delaware, according to AirNow.gov, is expected to remain in the “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” ranges through at least Friday, June 9.

Members of the greater University of Delaware community donated 219 books to the children’s book drive hosted by the UD Library, Museums and Press. These books were donated to West Park Place Elementary School in Newark, a public school in the Christina School District, to enhance its library collections and benefit students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Lauren Lynch, a University of Delaware Class of 2023 graduate, overcame formidable challenges to obtain her degree. Unlike many of her classmates, Lynch's journey within the healthcare system began during her senior year of high school when she was diagnosed with aplastic anemia — a rare condition that occurs when the body stops producing enough new blood cells. Despite having to take medical leave from UD to undergo treatment, she remained steadfast in her dream of becoming a nurse.
