    AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – WJBF’s Black Excellence 365 recognizes inspiring black individuals and organizations in the CSRA year-round. Recipients are honored with the Mary L. Jones Black Affirmation Award. This month, we honor The Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, an organization empowering young ladies to become leaders in the community. It was during the height of the Civil Rights Movement when Mrs. Rosa T. Beard, a science teacher at A. R. Johnson Magnet School, was approached by her students.

    AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A local army post now has a new name. For decades it was known as Fort Gordon but just a few hours ago that all changed- to Fort Eisenhower. Friday’s redesignation ceremony included music, ceremonial unveilings and a special guest speaker – Susan Eisenhower, General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s granddaughter. Leaders of newly-named Fort Eisenhower tell us that today not only marks a name change, but also a move to incorporate the Eisenhower name into training.

    Earlier this month, people in Bulloch County responded to an urgent animal hoarding situation. A local organization helped safely shelter some of those animals. Nancy Kay started Southern Souls Rescue nearly 15 years ago to help animals in need. She tells us she did it to carry on the memory of her loving son. Southern Souls Rescue has spent over a decade rescuing small-breed, special needs dogs. Earlier in the month, 193 dogs and cats were rescued from a home in Bulloch County.
